Medvin Deva never misses out on practice and stays off junk food

Medvin is a synonym for dedication. Don’t try looking it up in any English dictionary. Medvin is a ten-year-old boy who has displayed rare dedication, discipline and passion while going about achieving one Guinness record after another in limbo skating, an adventure sport drawn from roller skating. In limbo skating, the participant skates below an obstacle, less than a foot above ground level, and he does this without hitting the obstacle. While the skater is required to spread his legs wide apart at about 180 degrees , he is also required to bend forward with his face almost kissing the ground.

It took Medvin five years to master limbo skating.

It was a long and tedious process. However, starting early helped him work on his flexibility.

“Right from the age of three, Medvin would always listen to his coach and take his instructions very seriously,” says his father Deva.

At the Anna Nagar Roller Skating Club, Medvin was trained by coaches Uni Krishnan and Abi.

Practice was the keyword for this student of CSI Ewart Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Anna Nagar. Medvin wakes up as early as 4:30 a.m. and heads to the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium for practice. Warm-up, some practice and a quick breakfast in the car are part of his daily routine before he heads out to school by 8:30 a.m.

“In the evening, he practises from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.,” says Deva.

“Many a time, practice took place at home too. My father removed all the furniture from the hall making it easy for me to skate, ” says Medvin.

Practising limbo skating involves suffering bruises, but Medvin has taken it all in his stride. Considering he has achieved a Guiness record for the third time, the efforts have not been in vain. As he has to be slim for limbo skating, the boy follows a strict diet too. He keeps away from junk food. Considering he is just a little 10-year-old, that is a feat by itself.
