MUMBAI: China bagged the first place in the International Physics Olympiad. India stood sixth along with Taiwan. India's team of five boys brought home a gold and four silvers.

Pune's Prafulla Dhariwal bagged the gold medal while Abhishek Anand from Bhilai, Yash Gupta from Udaipur, Abhijit Lavania from Chandigarh and Souvanik Chakrabarti from Hyderabad bagged a silver each. As many as 83 nations took part in the 44th International Physics Olympiadat Copenhagen from July 7 to 15.

The five students were selected via a three-tier process. The first-tier consisted of a nationwide examination in physics in which over 41,000 students appeared. The remaining two tiers consisted of a series of difficult selection tests-both theoretical and practical.

The Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education is the nodal centre for all Science Olympiads.
