Seminar on ‘India's Higher Education Landscape’
1. The Embassy organized a seminar on ‘India’s Higher Education Landscape’ at the Embassy premises on 14 February 2024 to showcase the advancements and future prospects of Indian higher education sector for potential collaboration between both countries.
2. The chief guest of the event was H.E. Lana Othman Al-Ayyar, CEO Al Rayan Holding Co. and Guest of honour was Ms. Nourah Al Ghanim, Chairperson of Union of Private Schools in Kuwait. The seminar comprised of remarks by Ambassador of India, Dr. Ashwin Fernandes, Executive Director at QS World University Rankings and author of the book “India’s Knowledge Supremacy: The New Dawn” and Dr. Ramakrishna Raman, Vice Chancellor of Symbiosis International University, Pune.
3. The following important facets of Indian Higher Education sector were highlighted during the seminar:
- The New Education Policy 2020 of India was a game-changer in bringing about a transformational change in the educational sector of India;
- India is fast going to become a globally prominent education hub in the near future with education sector in India estimated to be worth USD 117 Bn and expected to reach USD 313 Bn by FY30;
- India has one of the largest networks of higher education systems in the world - 45,000-degree colleges, over 1000 universities and around 1500 top institutes.
- India is becoming Ed Tech capital of the world; out of 36 Ed-Tech unicorn companies, 7 are Indian which are valued at USD 34.05 billion as of June 2022.
- 100% FDI (automatic route) is allowed in the education sector in India. USD 9.3 billion FDI in Education sector between Apr 2000- Sept 2023.
- India has the maximum Universities (148) among all Asian countries in QS Asia list and 45 Universities in QR World rankings
- Ambitious goal of Government of India to achieve a Gross Enrollment ratio of 50% by 2035
- 25% of the global school population is in India
- Indian Universities are successfully setting up campuses abroad including premier institutions like Indian Institutes of Technology (Abu Dhabi and Tanzania); Birla Institute of Technology, Pilani and Amity University (Dubai); Sharda and Sambroom Universities (Uzbekistan) etc
- India is one of the leading countries in patent filing and publication of research papers in international journals
- Foreign Universities like Deakin University is setting up IBC at GIFT city, Gujarat.
4. The seminar was useful in projecting opportunities for greater collaboration between the two countries in the educational sector, including setting up campuses of Indian Universities in Kuwait, enrollment of Kuwaiti students in Indian Universities, enrollment of Indian students in Kuwaiti Universities, recruitment of faculty-members and exchange programmes between Universities of both countries. Around 350 people attended the event, including representatives of Kuwait University, Kuwait College of Science and Technology, AUM, faculty members of other Universities in Kuwait, Principals of Indian and International schools, prominent members of Indian community, teachers, students and friends from media.
