An online forum to guide young doctors

Become a good human being.

At a time when there is criticism that medical profession is becoming a business and it is losing sanctity, a group of senior doctors are giving the lessons of equality and righteousness to the new generation of doctors.

These doctors find answers to the doubts raised by the beginners in the profession from their wealth of experience. The platform for this is an online community called Tamil Nadu Medical Graduates Club (TNMGC), started by a few senior doctors in Chennai.

It was in 2013 that the website www.tnmgc.com was started under the leadership of Dr K. Badrinath, an orthopaedic expert in London.

There is a story behind why Dr Badrinath created this forum. Dr Badrinath was a student of Madras Medical College (1961 batch). On the 50th anniversary of the batch, he began a search for his classmates and found almost 70 of them. In 2011, they gathered in Chennai and walked down memory lane. They sang old songs and shared news of their lives.

All of them were unhappy that the new generation in the field of medicine were lacking in social obligation. They felt that way because they had entered medical profession half-a-century ago using intelligence and hard work, long before the discovery of self-financing medical colleges and capitation fee. And the new developments made them unhappy. tnmgc.com was the product of this unhappiness.

At that gathering, it was decided that they would do their best to guide new doctors. It can be said that the basis for this online forum is the realisation that an MBBS, an MD and a specialisation alone would not make a person a good doctor.

Dr Badrinath said that most young doctors have a lot of doubts. Their concerns are many. Is specialisation necessary? If so, which branch should be selected? Is it possible to succeed in that speciality? Is it compulsory that all doctors must be specialists? Can’t a doctor who has exhaustive understanding and vision about all types of diseases and medicines become an excellent family doctor without any specialisation? Is it a must that a good doctor should practice only as a part of major hospitals? Like many others, is medical profession just another job to make money?

The leaders of tnmgc.com believe that experienced doctors will be able to answer these questions.

Thus, this website is a forum where doctors from all parts of the world can share their concerns, ideas and experience. Its membership and services are completely free. The website also gives an opportunity to young doctors to publish their treatises on medical science.

Doctors from different parts of the world will be able to comment on those treatises. Articles by senior doctors on current issues related to their profession and controversies about medical ethics can also be found on the website.

Advance notices about seminars on medical science to be held in different countries; information, including YouTube videos, about the events; research findings and links to authoritative sites on different fields in medical science are also present on the website.

Dr Badrinath is the editor and the medical advisor of the website. The moderators are Dr Mohan Govindaraj (London) and Dr A.P. Raghuthaman (Houston).
