When scooter to Bentley lined up for road safety

 
Kcohin city on Saturday witnessed a unique procession when about 50 vehicles ranging from the super luxurious Bentley to the legendary Harley Davidson and the everyday scooter hit the road propagating road safety messages.

Those vehicles belonging to different classes were united by a single feature – all of them had the registration number 1, which contributes a minimum of Rs. 1 lakh to the government exchequer besides fetching a few additional lakhs if the number goes on auction.

The procession flagged off by Transport Commissioner R. Sreelekha from Durbar Hall ground and piloted by a vehicle propagating road safety messages made its way through Marine Drive and High Court to the Goshree Bridge before returning almost an hour after garnering many an eyeball all along.

A display of vintage cars was another major attraction of the event, which was organised by the Motor Vehicle Department to observe the Kerala Foundation Day as one for creating awareness about road safety and to abstain from the vice grip of alcohol and drugs.

The procession was preceded by a walkathon participated by 700-odd students and teachers from the Kalamassery-based School of Communication and Management Studies.

In keeping with the State government decision not to use flex boards for official functions, all the promotional materials and banners at the event were made out of cloth and paper.

The procession was received back at the Durbar Hall by a flash mob by youngsters followed by a musical drama on the dangers posed by drugs.

Inaugurating the function, Excise Minister K. Babu said that the State would approach the Centre to make possession of drugs, irrespective of the quantity, a non-bailable offence. He said that efforts would be made to promote water transport to reduce the pressure on roads.

City Police Commissioner K.G. James administered the oath against drugs and alcohol and on road safety. A number (70255-01300) to which the public can sent photographic evidence of motor vehicle rule violations as part of MVD’s third eye programme was announced at the function.

District Collector M.G. Rajamanikam, and Deputy Transport Commissioner E.S. James were among those present.
