Indian women in Kuwait join hands to create Guinness record
95 Indian Women from Kuwait crocheting their way to create Guinness Record for the World’s largest blanket in Chennai.
A passionate mind seeks its goal in spite of all difficulties. In yet another example of the power of committed mind and harnessing social media for constructive work, a group of Indian ladies, cutting across all languages and religions, overcoming land boundaries have embarked upon a mission to create a Guinness record for world’s largest crochet blanket.
Crochet is an art of creating fabric by interlacing yarn using a hook. A mission to create the largest crochet blanket and creating a Guinness record was conceived by a Chennai based passionate crocheter Subashri Natrajan. She along with likeminded passionate women created a social media group called (MICQ) ”Mother India’s Crochet Queens” . MICQ is actively pursuing the record. The previous record was 3377 sq mtr by South Africa. The mission is to break the previous record by making 5000 sq mtr of Crochet blanket.
The task is to make many individual blankets of 1 sq meter each and join them to make a bigger blanket. A group of women from Kuwait from age group 12 to 80 consisting of homemakers, Doctors, Teachers, full time office goers and students have joined hands in this venture . The Kuwait team consisting of 95 participants from Salmiya , Riggae , Kheitan, Sulaibikhat , Mangaf , Mahbula and Abuhalifa , across all religion and language, coordinated by area coordinator Bhavani Kasiviswanathan embarked on the task and contributed 204 square meters for this record.
The team has successfully completed the committed blankets and dispatched them to Chennai.
All these blankets made by Indian participants from Oman, Qatar , Bahrain ,UAE , UK , USA , Australia and other countries are finally joined together to one single blanket of 5000 Sq mtr.
A meet of the participants was held at the IES Bhavans School, thanks to the School Authorities, to rejoice the completion of the task undertaken. Many creatively designed blankets were displayed. A large crochet blanket of peacock design, depicting the Indian National bird and India Gate that were done together by all participants was the icing on the cake. All the participants thanked and rejoiced the opportunity to be part of the Guinness record.
The official verification and announcement of the record is being planned on 31 January 2016 in Chennai at the MNM Jain college and after that all these participants get the participation certificate from Guinness officials for the largest crochet blanket in the world. Not only that, aftermath the record announcement, the blankets will be separated and redistributed to the orphanages, Government hospitals and needy all over India. These passionate and helping women team definitely ushers a hope for a greater India !!
