LET US LEAD THE FIGHT AGAINST DIABETES

We need to drastically increase the visibility of Diabetes as an important public health problem that requires urgent attention from policy-makers and health planners in our country. India has the highest number of diabetics in the world. Impaired Glucose Tolerance (IGT) is also a mounting problem in India.

People with Type 1 Diabetes diabetes need injections of insulin every day in order to control the levels of glucose in their blood.  Type 2 Diabetes accounts for at least 90% of all cases of diabetes.  When diabetes is diagnosed,  a registered dietitian can create a simple eating plan, taking into account the weight, medicines, lifestyle and other existing health problems. Good diabetes control means keeping the blood sugar levels as close to normal as possible. For many people with diabetes, smart eating, weight loss and active living are enough to control their blood sugar level and prevent the complications. Studies reveal that plant-based diets play an important role in reducing the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

Centre for Media & Public Affairs (CMPA) will celebrate  'World Diabetes Day' on Wednesday, November 14, 2012 in Chennai with the participation of eminent people from all domains of the society. World Diabetes Day campaign is led by the International Diabetes Federation and its member associations around the world, including the American Diabetes Association, Diabetes UK, Diabetes Australia, the Canadian Diabetes Association, Diabetes South Africa, Diabetes New Zealand and the Diabetic Association of India.

CMPA urges the media people, artists, healthcare professionals, public workers and academicians to join us to drive change at all levels, to prevent diabetes and to increase access to essential medicines. CMPA believes that  increased awareness would lead to more resources to fight the causes of diabetes and promote researches into improved treatment options.

Let us lead the fight against diabetes by advocating on behalf of people with diabetes!

Cordially,

V.Venkat Raj
