Novel endoscopic myotomy to treat achalsia cardia
Coimbatore: A city-based hospital has claimed that it has successfully treated six patients suffering from achalsia cardia, for the last nine months in which the sphincter at the lower end food pipe failed to relax and get tightened, preventing food and water entering the stomach.
Announcing this to reporters here today, Dr C Palanivelu, Chairman of the Gem Hospital and Research Centre, said the surgeons are trying novel approach to cure achalsia cardia, a disease in swallowing and regurgitation of food, resulting in weight loss, through Endoscopic Hellers.
Though this can be treated through laparoscopic surgery, the doctors are now trying Endoscpic Myotomy, which is becoming popular to treat the disease and the procedure is called Per Oral Endoscopic Myotomy (POEM), Dr P S Rajan, who is heading the therapeutic Endoscopy wing at the Centre, said.
Palanivelu said in the future this procedure will replace Laparoscopic myotomy, since POEM was more advantageous to the patients, which was in the trial stage across the World, including in India (Mumbai and Coimbatore).
