1Prof. Dr. Mohamed Rela, Director& Head of the Institue of Liver Disease & Transplantation, Global Hospitals Group, has been recognized by ‘Top Masters in Healthcare Administration’ as one of the 20 Most Innovative Pediatric Surgeons alive today in the world.

He is the first clinician of Indian origin who has been appointed chairman of the Pediatric Committee of the International Liver Transplantation Society (ILTS) and is also a council member of the International Living Donor Liver Transplantation Study Group.

Prof Mohamed Rela, world renowned transplant surgeon who performed a successful liver transplant on a 5 day old child, earned a place in the Guinness book of world records in 2000. After almost two decades, he met again with the  little girl, BaebhenSchutkke, who is now 20 years old. She is a law student and her interests include canoeing, swimming, and hill climbing.

Prof Mohamed Rela has set up a successful Living Donor Liver Transplant program in Chennai performing over 275 liver transplants a year. He has performed more than 4500 liver transplants surgeries of which 2500 have been in India. He has helped train surgeons and set up liver transplant programmes around the world.

2This surgeon was born in Mayiladuthurai village in Tamil Nadu India and his parents are Haji SAShamsudin and HasmaBeevi. He was a student from the Kalakshetra School, Chennai and got his MBBS from Stanley Medical College, Chennai. After completing an MS from the same college, he went to the United Kingdom in 1986 and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1988.

Prof. Mohamed Rela worked in various hospitals in the UK before joining London’s King’s College Hospital in 1991. At the King's College Hospital, he pioneered the split liver transplantation technique, which involves the division of a healthy donor organ to help transplant it to two patients. He has one of the largest experiences in the world in Auxiliary Liver Transplantation.

3In Jun 2003, he successfully did a liver transplant for a four-and-a-half-year-old girl from Ahmedabad, Pranali Bhat, suffering from a terminal stage liver disease, at the Global Hospital, Hyderabad. In Aug 2003, he was a part of a team from King’s College Hospital, London which did liver transplant(s) six times for the patient to save her life.

Dr Mohamed Rela treated the then Bharatiya Janata Party general secretary, Pramod Mahajan with extensive injuries in to his liver in 2006. In August 2004, a team led by him has successfully conducted  liver transplantation for a five-year-old Pakistani girl, Batul Hasan, at the Global Hospital, Hyderabad.

In September 2009, a team led by him successfully performed Split liver transplantation (first of its kind in India), at the Global Hospital, Chennai. The liver was split during the retrieval operation into a smaller left lobe for transplanting a young girl and a larger right lobe for transplanting an older woman with end stage liver disease. In May 2011, a team led by him  successfullyperformed a  Swap liver transplantation on adult patients (first of its kind in India), at Global Hospitals & Health city, Chennai.

4Prof. Dr. Mohamed Rela is not only an experienced  Auxiliary Liver Transplantation surgeon in the world , he is also an academic powerhouse and has published over 500 original articles and reviews in the subject of transplantation and Hepatobiliary surgery in international peer-reviewed journals and has written 19 book chapters including a chapter in the prestigious “Grays Anatomy”.

He has a keen interest in tamil literature and has given several talks on Kambaramayanam.

He is taking over as the Chairman and Managing Director of Dr Rela Institute and Medical Center which is a brand new 450 bedded super-speciality hospital in Chennai
