Dr. Ramani Suriya

Dr. (Mrs.) Ramani

– A practical thinking woman

by Aparna Vijai

Charity begins at home is a famous English idiom which means that first take care of your near and near ones emotionally, intellectually and financially. This fathomless truth is thoroughly imbibed by this simple and yet straightforward lady.

Born  in Anakapalli in Andhra Pradesh to parents Shri DVSN Sastry and MRs.Radha Devi,  a middle class family, Ramani grew up with her father  Shri DVSN Sastry influencing her character and outlook of life thoroughly.

Her father who retired as a Superintendent for Post & Telegraphs, Visakhpatnam Zone, had to travel a lot in Andhra Pradesh due to his profession. Her mother took extreme care of Ramani and his brother Shri. Balaji who is now settled in the US as a Senior Director for a famous company.

Ramani studied in various schools in Andhra Pradesh due to regular transfers of her father, but wherever she studied she always brought laurels to the school and respect to her family. She went on to become a medical doctor by doing her MBBS in Andhra University and while she was in her final year of MBBS she got married in the year 1986 to her husband Mr. S. Surya Prakash, who himself later on became a big fan of her due to her practical approach to life.

After marriage she went on to complete her DGO from Gandhi University, Hyderabad with the able support of her husband and her in –laws.

Her husband had to leave a safe job in a Public Sector Undertaking in his own town Hyderabad and go to Libya for work as the finances of his home demanded. He left in October 1995 and soon thereafter Ramani who was a practicing gynecologist then joined him in Libya.

The conditions in Libya were not fit for a family to live but due to Ramani’s patience and her matured nature the family lived happily for about four years with their son Srikar who was then just six years old. While in Libya Ramani showed extreme patience cooking variety of vegetarian dishes form the limited supply of vegetables, maintaining the house spic and span and above all supporting her husband in all matters in  his difficult times in Libya.

When they finally returned to Hyderabad after a period of four years Ramani’s  stature as a matured woman grew to big proportions in the eyes of her husband and her in-laws. In the year 2000 they all shifted to Kuwait.

By then they were blessed with a daughter Dikshita who was then just four months old. Looking after the family was Ramani’s top priority and she sacrificed her career for the sake of her children. She never wanted a maid to look after her infant daughter and her growing son.

In the initial years of their stay in Kuwait her husband earned a meager salary and with this salary the family here had to live and also Surya’s parents had to be supported financially. Ramani took charge of the expenses and with her maturity and her broad thinking the family was able to survive for three long years.

There were times when the finances ran out and became nil in the middle of the month. But Ramani never complained and she went about doing the household chores. After the initial struggling years during which Ramani was also able to complete her MRCGO- Part I, her husband got a better offer in KOC in the year 2004. The things changed for the brighter side. Now Ramani began to concentrate on her career and went on to complete MRCOG – Part II as well in UK. Immediately she was offered a job in MOH and is presently a Registrar in Gynecology Department of Farwaniya Hospital.

Her life is an example of dedication, truthfulness and sincerity. She could live comfortably even when the savings were meager and she lives the same even now when their finances are much brighter.

Her hobbies include reading books both in her native language Telugu and in English, learning classical music.  She  is  strogly supporting  her husband’s social activities  and encourage him for that. She is a firm believer in God but says as long as we cannot love our own people and friends whom we can see there is no use in telling we love God.

Charity begins at home is truly personified in this simple but yet straight forward and pratcial thinking person Ramani.
