Chronicle 2019: Reminiscence of Indian history in IES
Theatre is a mirror, a sharp reflection of society. It forces the young minds to think actively, logically, and emotionally about the human situations, problems, and challenges that they encounter in unfolding scenarios. History provides the substantive, factual framework of information that the pupils use in bringing the past to life through drama and role play. Keeping this in mind, Indian Education School, Kuwait, organized ‘Chronicle 2019’ - an Interschool Historical Drama Competition on 28th November in the IES auditorium.
The programme commenced with the recital of a few verses from the Holy Quran followed by the lighting of the lamp by the chief guest, Mr. Mahesh Iyer, Principal of Smart Indian School, the judges for the event, Ms. Lalitha Sridhar and Ms. Mary Bindu Ervin in the presence of Ms. Anselma Tessy, Senior Vice Principal of IES, Ms Jaemi Byju, Vice Principal, Middle Wing, IES, Ms. Lalitha Premkumar, Vice Principal, Kindergarten and Primary Wing, IES, and Ms. Meenakshi Nayyar, Vice Principal (CCA), IES. Mr. Binoy Mathew, Head of the Department of Social Science, IES, delivered the welcome address. Ms. Lalitha Sridhar, a versatile personality who has won many accolades in Fine Arts, and Ms. Mary Bindu Ervin, faculty member, Integrated Indian School, were the judges for the day.
The theme of Chronicle 2019 was ‘Modern History of India’. Salmiya Indian School-Indigo Rebellion, Smart Indian School –Chalo Dandi March and Indian Education School-Bhagat Singh, contested with fifteen members in each team. All the three plays exuded a sense of nationalism and patriotism with a fine blend of powerful dialogue, gestures and actions. The invigorating performance of the budding actors sensitized the audience transporting them back to the era of Freedom Movement highlighting the sacrifices made by the Indian freedom fighters.
Mrs. Lalitha Premkumar, Vice Principal, plugged the waving curiosity of the audience by declaring the results of the contest. IES emerged as winners securing 89.5 points. However, IES being the host school, Smart Indian School, who came second with an impressive 85 points, was declared winners. Subsequently, Salmiya Indian Model School, with 70 points, was adjudged runners-up. Joshua Denis, student of IES, grabbed the best actor title for his passionate performance as Bhagat Singh. The judges appreciated the budding actors and their stupendous team work. The Chief Guest Mr. Mahesh Iyer honoured the winners with trophies and certificates, and applauded the efforts of the Social Science Faculty of IES for having come up with an interesting contest that would kindle interest in the students and take them closer to Indian history, and to the great freedom fighters of the nation. The Chief Guest and the judges were presented beautiful paintings as tokens of gratitude.
The competition was anchored by Nakshatra Neeraj Binu and Aditya Simon of Grade 7, IES. As the contest drew to a close, Ms. Sujatha Jaishankar, faculty member of Social Science, expressed her gratitude and profusely thanked all the participants, guests, judges, and the staff for their incredible support in making the maiden Interschool Historical Drama Competition a grand success.
