IES GRANDMASTER JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP 2022
IES GRANDMASTER JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP 2022
“Chess: The gymnasium of the mind that can make players focused and clear-sighted!”
The benefits of teaching chess to children and integrating it into the curriculum extend far beyond academic capabilities. Chess helps children learn to analyse, to plan and to perform, both over the board and in real life. Children learn to concentrate, to think ahead, solve complex problems, and take difficult decisions- all valuable life-skills. Schools under the umbrella of Bhavans Middle East are always looking for ways to create holistic learning experiences for children by desegregating sports, games and arts into their mainstream curriculum.
Indian Education School, Bhavans Kuwait hosted its maiden Junior Chess Championship with an intent to provide a platform for the budding chess players of the primary section to showcase their mettle in chess and spark the interest of the others to pursue the mind game. The event was organized and hosted by the Physical Education Department of the school under the able guidance of the Head of the Department, Dr Murugaiyan. The students from Grades 1 to 4 participated in the Championship on September 22nd, 2022. As the day of the Chess tournament approached, 50 highly enthusiastic students were all geared up to beat their opponents in nail-biting matches. The students were categorized into 4 groups: MINI KIDDIES (GRADE 1 students), KIDDIES (Grade 2 students), MINI CADETS (Grade 3 students) and CADETS (Grade 4 students). The matches were held in Swiss system style.
The Headmistress welcomed the gathering. The Championship was formally inaugurated by the school principal, Mr T. Premkumar. The participants were judged by the P E instructors of IES. It was indeed quite heart-warming to see the young children playing their moves like stalwarts with rapt concentration and collected demeanour.
