IES held Earth Day Celebrations 2023 

‘Empowering Bhavanites for Sustainable Action’

The annual Earth Day celebrations this year aimed to remind students that the Earth can be protected by making small yet significant changes in their lives. Earth Day 2023 was organized under the aegis of the Department of Science in collaboration with the Department of Art and the Bhavans Eco Club, on Wednesday and Thursday, the 19th and 20th of April, 2023. 

The two-day celebration began with a variety of on-stage programs, including a special assembly for students in Grades 5 and 6. Ms. Reanna Samuel of 5D and Ms. Aylin Elza of 5E gave the welcome address, followed by Ms. Aliza Rehan Shaikh of 4A, who spoke about the importance of Earth Day and its theme for 2023: Invest in Our Planet. The speech was followed by a beautiful song on nature, ‘Hum Yahin Jeeyenge’, by master Devang Koroth of 5B, and a graceful dance by Ms. Anagha Suraj of 6B on the theme, ‘Mother Earth’. 

 The young nature enthusiasts of Grade 5 and 6 presented a choral recitation, ‘Nature’, by   Meera M Deen, followed by a vibrant dance performance by senior students of Grade 9. The performances closed with a soulful rendition of the song, ‘Door Tumse Rehke Bata Me Kya Karu, by Ms. Serafin Fredy of 8B. 

The Principal of IES, Mr. T. Prem Kumar, sensitized the students against food wastage and advised them to use electricity mindfully at home and at school. He appreciated the special assembly presented and emphasized the importance of being aware of one’s responsibility towards environmental conservation. The Vice Principal, Ms. Meenakshi Nayyar, reiterated the importance of celebrating Earth Day and encouraged the children to think of simple yet practical ways to reduce waste generated by homes.  

The Principal, Vice Principal Senior Wing, and the Head Mistress, were presented with special seed pencils that could be planted, prepared by the students of Grades 5 to 7, and seed pens crafted by the students of Grades 8 and 9. They were also gifted an assortment of seed packets handmade by the students of IES. The Art teacher, Mr. Prashanthan, was appreciated by the Principal for guiding the children in collaboration with the respective science teachers. Vice Principal Middle Wing, Mr. Binoy Mathew, also graced the occasion with his presence. 

On the second day, students participated in a plethora of activities organized to commemorate Earth Day 2023. The activities aimed to sensitize the children towards the conservation of natural resources and to motivate them to do their part in making the planet more beautiful. An inter-class competition, ‘Upcycle the Waste’, for students in Grades 1 to 4 was conducted on the second day to promote SDG (Sustainable Development Goal) number 12: Responsible Consumption and Production. Art Teacher, Primary Wing, Ms. Sherly Abraham, selected the best and innovative artwork and declared the winners. 

The two-day celebration was a grand success. The programme ended with the vote of thanks by the Deputy Prime Minister of the academic session 2022-23, master Isiah P Thomas of grade 5.E. The students of IES enjoyed a truly immersive experience with lessons that will last a lifetime and ignite the fervor to protect their planet.
