IISM Launches Transformative Professional Development Series for Educators
The commencement of the second academic session marked a significant new chapter for India International School Mangaf (IISM) with the appointment of Dr. K. Saleem as its new Principal. A dynamic educational visionary who has served the institution since its inception, Dr. K. Saleem brings a profound legacy and deep understanding of the school’s ethos, blending tradition with innovative approaches to transform the educational landscape.
Under his inspiring leadership, IISM launched a comprehensive week-long workshop series starting on August 17, 2025, aimed at enhancing the pedagogical skills of educators and deepening their engagement with modern educational frameworks. Each day featured specialized sessions led by experienced faculty members. In total, the intensive professional development series spanned an enriching seven and a half hours, offering faculty a compact yet impactful learning experience.
The series opened with Mrs. Anita M. Varghese from the English Department, who led a lively session on integrating Life Skills into daily teaching. She defined the vital areas of social, emotional, and thinking skills, encouraged discussions on teaching challenges, and presented innovative methods like experiential learning and group collaboration. The session also highlighted the synergy between CBSE initiatives and NEP 2020, emphasizing holistic child development.
On August 18, Mr. Mohammed Sabeer, Biology teacher, conducted a session on Value Education aligned with NEP 2020. He explored various categories of values—personal, social, moral, spiritual, and educational—and stressed the use of participatory, experiential teaching over rote learning. Practical examples from Science, Sports, and community-based activities illustrated how values such as empathy, cooperation, integrity, and responsibility could be effectively cultivated. The session reinforced the role of value education in shaping ethical and responsible citizens consistent with NEP 2020’s holistic vision.
The following day, Mrs. Prema Balasubramanyan, coordinator for grades VI-VIII, presented on 21st Century Skills, highlighting their significance in equipping students for success in a digitally connected world. She outlined three core areas: Learning Skills (the 4Cs—Critical Thinking, Communication, Creativity, Collaboration), Literacy Skills (Information, Media, and Technology literacy), and Life Skills (Flexibility, Leadership, Initiative, Productivity, and Social Skills). The session included definitions, real-life examples, and strategies for skill development, supported by active teaching methods such as project-based learning, role play, debates, and gamification to engage students effectively.
On August 20, Ms. Suhrabi OM from the Maths Department led educators through the National Curriculum Framework (NCF) 1.1.1. She focused on its guiding principles and global alignment, addressing practical implementation strategies and common challenges, while offering solutions to successfully apply the framework. The session aimed to ensure holistic education that meets both national and international standards.
The series concluded on August 22 with Principal Dr. K. Saleem’s engaging session on Transactional Analysis. He introduced key concepts including the Parent, Adult, and Child ego states, demonstrating their applications in improving communication, resolving conflicts, and strengthening relationships within the school community. Educators were provided with practical tools to foster a more supportive and understanding environment in their daily interactions.
The entire workshop series invigorated the faculty with renewed enthusiasm and a shared commitment to innovative, student-centered teaching practices. It fostered collaboration, encouraged reflective growth, and reinforced IISM’s dedication to continuous professional excellence and holistic student development. The school community looks forward to applying the valuable insights gained to enhance classroom experiences and empower students to thrive in an evolving global landscape.
