DON BOSCO ORATORY INTER SCHOOL BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP - 2014

KUWAIT – Salmiya, The annual Don Bosco Oratory Inter School Basketball Championship for boys and girls under the age group of 12 years / 14 years and 16 years ended on Feb 8th 2014. UIS claimed the overall Championship yet again for the 11th year in running. In total seven Indian schools participating in this year’s championship, with Jabriya Indian School making their first time entry in this tournament.
During my short interview with Mr. Christopher Fernandes the President of Don Bosco Oratory here in Kuwait, he said “Organizes such tournaments for the young children who get their first taste of competition, and secondly it’s a platform where local clubs scouts come to discover new and young talents, giving our children an opportunity of playing in high level competition”. He went on saying a special thanks to the IEAS School for the use of their premises, our sponsors Mr. Philip Duarte, Mr. Liston Raju and Mr. Stephen Fernandes. Asked Mr. Fernandes that what other activities that are organized for the School Children, He said and in confidence that sometime this year we plan to organize 4 A side Rink Football for under 12 and 14 years, in addition a volley ball tournament for girls under 12 and 14 years. I would love to see schools participating in our tournament. Next year we were planning to also add the under 19 team to the basketball group. It’s not yet confirmed due to the cost factor. If you notice it was an individual effort as companies are not ready to sponsor Interschool events.
Boys under 12 years
It took United Indian School (UIS) just 6 seconds to get points on the scoreboard, and 1 minute to take the lead in the boys under 12 years basketball finals. First half score UIS 18 and IIS-M 7. It was in the second half that Adam Roy with 9 baskets and Nikhil Varghese with 6 baskets increased their pace taking the match away from IIS-M reach. The young and inexperienced side of IIS-M never gave up and fought hard to stop the UIS running machine from scoring. IIS – M weak on the defense & rebounds gave UIS the advantage they needed to dominate and take charge of the game. Final score UIS 54 and IIS-M 10

Girls under 12
After a satisfying win by UIS under 12 boys, it was the girls turn to display their skills and regain their crown as the under12 girl’s champions. UIS had a strong message to their opponents in the group that they are unstoppable. It was the team Vice Captain Ruby Ann Jerry who made a difference int the UIS team. All they had to do was win to top the pool for the first place. Their only team that could have stopped them was IEAS who also won all their matches with big margins. The fight for the top spot was between both these schools. It was UIS taking the advantage with the errors made by IEAS players. Quietly effective on the defensive and skillful dribbling made the difference for UIS. IEAS hopes were on Shreya Sunil / Bernadine Dsouza and Sharlene Sanctis to who had to shoulder the responsibility of taking IEAS to the top spot in their group.

Boys under 14
Both schools had young talents and a well fought finals. DPS defeating the last year’s holders 47 /40 full time score sealed their first victory in this group category, at half time the score was 21/17 in DPS favor. It was Anurag Sreenath with 22 points and Shabenandan GK with 16 points who changed the game for DPS. After picking up a thrilling win with UIS during the league stages a week ago, this too was a close fought match 37 / 32 in favor of DPS. Winning the finals meant a lot for DPS and beating UIS in the finals was a dream come true for coach Dileep of DPS.

Girls under 14
The UIS girls under 14 could not defend their crown against last year’s runner’s up. They had a rough day in the finals with just scoring 2 points on the board against IEAS 19 points. UIS first opening league match in the pool was IEAS which was a close fought match with first half both team tie on the score 6 / 6 and IEAS winning with just one point 17 / 16 at the final hooter. Finals were a different game played by IEAS who turned the tables of game around and beating UIS 30 / 9 a total different skills displayed by the team. I managed to catch up with IEAS coach Ms. Penny Rebello, and question her about her team’s performance in the finals. And the response was “I just told the girls to play in confidence ensure not to miss your baskets and ensure the rebounds are collected” said Ms. Rebello. The star for IEAS was Vishakha Jayram and Mariam John, not mentioning Kareena Sequiera who had her man marked well as instructed by her coach.

Boys under 16
Carmel School Kuwait (CSK) beats United Indian School (UIS). Carmel School scored a season high 46 points, including three continuous three point shots in the final 1 minute for Carmel’s by Kelvin Joseph. CSK started on a shaky note with just 3 points on the board, whereas UIS were 8 points in the first quarter, and continue to maintain the 6 points lead into the second half. It was Sujin Sebastian scored a high of 16 points to lead UIS in the first two quarters. Arjun Shibu had 15 points for UIS, had missed his last four shorts from the three points. Rahul Noore took that advantage and ensured his name on the score chart by his best score 25 points led CSK in the 3rd quarter.

Girls under 16
As always, compiling the ranking is an exercise in uncertainly. Unless schools play each other in the league format, but its two or three schools who out stand are UIS/IEAS and DPS. The pool consists of the following schools: CSK / IEAS / UIS / DPS / JIS, top 4 team in the pool making it through for the first/second/3rd and 4th place. IEAS needed more determination and fighting skills like their under 14 girls, could have won the under 16 girls championship. However it was UIS with the points above 30 points on score board in all their matches. Whereas IEAS almost had the same points, but lost out with UIS 35 / 22 in favor of UIS.
