‘Greater than Bradman: celebrating Sachin, the greatest batsman in Test history’. This is the title of a new book on cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar by Rudolph Lambert Fernandez, a Chennai-based author.

Tendulkar’s 41st birthday — his first after retirement — falls on April 24 and the author believes the book would present the Indian maestro as the greatest batsman of all time.

“It (the book) is an analysis. It is a first of its kind, forensic study that aims to set the record straight. The book uses illustrations from science, history and the martial arts to challenge the unanimous popular position. It questions traditional measures of greatness that revolve around statistics. It offers a more honest approach that respects a batsman’s figures but places them against the backdrop of his playing environment,” Fernandez said. He added, “Many of the statistics are new. I hope I am also offering a new way of looking at them.”

Fernandez, a seasoned writer whose articles have appeared in various publications including The Hindu, said, “I am eager to present a paperback copy of the book (the eBook is already available at Amazon) to the three `A’s, who were in many ways responsible for Sachin realising his greatness — Ajit, his brother, Achrekar, his coach and Anjali, his wife.

“This book is a celebration of Sachin’s greatness and what he stood for on the cricket field.”

He was delighted “to be a voice from Chennai, calling for a fresh look at Sachin’s legacy.” Fernandez said, “Sachin played 10 Tests and six ODIs at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chepauk.

“It is in Chennai that he scored nearly 1,000 of his Test runs including five glorious centuries.”
