Gambhir touches a chord

Kolkata Knight Riders captain Gautam Gambhir struck a chord with Kolkatans when he said it was KKR’s responsibility to stand by the victims of the recent flyover collapse in the city.

Asked about his response to the tragic accident which shocked the City of Joy on March 31, Gambhir said, “It is very unfortunate and should not happen (have happened). It is our responsibility not only from KKR’s point of view but personally as an Indian to see how we can help the victims in any way. Personally, I will go out of my way to do it; KKR will go out of its way to do things. But obviously you cannot get the loss back. We would love to do whatever we can in our capacity,” said Gambhir.

Raving about the local fans’ support for KKR, Gambhir said, “The people of Kolkata are our biggest strength. The amount of loyalty and emotions they have shown, especially after the first three years — they have stuck with us, believed in us, feeling sad when you lose, feeling happy when you win.

“We have the capacity to change the mood of the people and that is why we have been fortunate. Hopefully, we will be able to give them a lot of happiness and pride. This is the responsibility God has blessed us with. We can actually make the people of Kolkata happy by playing cricket.”
