Manchester City hammers United
Manchester City laid down an early marker in the race for the English Premier League title as they hammered champions Manchester United 4-1 in a stunning performance on Sunday.
Arsenal and Tottenham both recorded wins to top the table on 12 points from five matches but City sent a message that they mean business as they dealt David Moyes’ side a blow to their confidence.
Aguero got things going with a brilliant volley while Toure doubled their lead on half-time, kneeing the ball over the line.
Argentina forward Aguero side-footed the third from close range and Nasri volleyed in the fourth, leaving Wayne Rooney’s late free-kick a mere consolation.
Arsenal is top on goal difference from Tottenham after a 3-1 win over Stoke City, a match notable for another outstanding showing from new signing Mesut Ozil.
The Germany forward had a hand in all three goals with Aaron Ramsey, Per Mertesacker and Bacary Sagna finding the net.
Ramsey set them on their way inside five minutes after Ozil’s free-kick had been saved, only for Geoff Cameron to equalise on 26 minutes.
Defender Mertesacker restored Arsenal’s lead 10 minutes later with a looping header and Sagna scored in similar fashion in the second half to kill off Stoke’s comeback hopes.
Tottenham left it late to join their north London rivals on 12 points as they won 1-0 at Cardiff.
The visitors dominated possession and had well over 20 shots on goal before Paulinho struck the winner three minutes into injury-time.
In the day’s other match, goals from Michu and Nathan Dyer gave Swansea City a 2-0 win at Crystal Palace, lifting them to ninth.
