Graduate course in Design

This is the first time that the IDC has made available Design courses for under-graduates.

IIT Bombay’s premier design institute, the Industrial Design Centre (IDC) will launch a new four-year Bachelor of Design (B. Des) course from this academic year enabling students inclined towards to Design to pursue the discipline after completing their Class XII.

This is the first time that the IDC has made available Design courses for under-graduates. So far IDC offers specialization in industrial design, visual communication, animation, interaction design, and mobility & vehicle design, but they were accessible only to post-graduates.

Announcing new courses IIT Bombay earlier this week, Prof BK Chakravarthy, Head of IDC, said the centre already offers Masters and PhD programmes in design, and adding a Bachelor’s programme would make design academics and practice at IDC more rigorous.

“As we progress from the Knowledge Economy towards Creative Economy, there is an increasing need in India for skilled professionals in the area of design. Design can play a crucial role in the development of the nation and work towards improvement of quality of life for all,” he said.

The IDC also launched an integrated five-year dual degree programme combining Bachelor’s and Masters degrees, but students would be allowed to option of doing the course only after completing their third year in B Des.

The online registration to apply for the said course will start from April 10, 2015. Admissions to B Des will be done through Undergraduate Common Entrance Examination for Design (UCEED) Students who have passed their Class XII or equivalent examination in 2014, or passed or appeared in 2015 from any discipline are eligible to apply.

The admission test will be conducted on May 31 across nine cities including Chennai, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Delhi, Guwahati, Mumbai and Pune.

The Industrial Design Centre was set up in 1969 by the Government of India under the auspices of Indian institute of Technology. IDC as an institution was conceived to be part of the IIT Bombay to give it a strong "result oriented" character so that there is always the possibility to actualize the design concepts emerging from its field of education and research.

IDC alumni have been at the forefront of actual design implementation in society. The most famous example is Dr D Udaya Kumar, who designed the new Rupee symbol and now teaches at the IIT Guwahati. In 1989, Prof Ravi Poovaiah along with Prof AG Rao designed the Electronic Voting Machines used in Indian elections. Design guru RK Joshi helped develop and digitise Devnagari fonts in mid-80s when computer revolution kicked in.

More information on the courses is available on UCEED website.
