Gergean: It’s all about children celebrating Ramadan!

453A9487 1‘Gergean', is a longstanding Kuwaiti heritage festival that is celebrated on the 13th, 14th and 15th day of Ramadan. On the days of Gergean, children dressed in Kuwaiti traditional clothes go door to door singing songs in exchange for nuts and candy. Before the 60's, Gergean was celebrated by the elderly, teenagers and children. Nowadays, it is mainly celebrated by children.

The Arabic department of Indian Education School in collaboration with the kindergarten facilitators celebrated Gergean in a befitting manner. The program was well coordinated by Ms. Rawia, the head of the Arabic department.  Principal, Mr. T. Premkumar officially inaugurated the program by distributing custom, themed Gergean goodie bags filled with candies and nuts to the Kindergarteners which is one of the main elements of Gergean.

Children dressed in traditional Kuwaiti attires, greeted the principal and other staff members in the school. The school was decorated with balloons, Gergean themed pictures and pouches. A colourful Gergean table was set up in the auditorium filled with candies and sweets which was later distributed among the children. The faculty members of the Arabic department adorned the palms of the little ones with intricate henna designs which filled the children  with cheer.

Traditional Gergean songs, invoking the blessings of God for the health and happiness of the children were played.  Children, mesmerised by the foot tapping music, got on to the stage to dance. After the fun-filled celebration, the little ones returned home beaming with joy carrying their goodie bags!
