IES Holds Mock General Assembly Session on AI as a Security Threat
The BMUN Team of Indian Education School, under the aegis of the Department of Social Science organized a Mock General Assembly session on the topic "AI as a Security Threat" on 8 June 2023 at the IES Auditorium. The event aimed to introduce students to the world of Model United Nations (MUN) and foster an interest in diplomacy and global affairs.
The event commenced with a brief introduction to Model UN, followed by a warm welcome address by Fida Ancy, Senior Vice President of Student Parliament. The audience consisted of grade 9 students who were eager to learn about international diplomacy and engage in meaningful discussions. The program successfully simulated the procedures of a MUN session, including parliamentary decorum and committee proceedings. The Secretariat, comprised of Zara Imitiaz (Chair), Fida Ancy (Assistant Chair), Manha Anees (Crisis Director), and Abhipsa Panda (Crisis Director), introduced the 14 delegates representing various nations in the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) to discuss the pressing issue of "AI as a Security Threat."
Throughout the session, delegates engaged in scintillating debates, presenting diverse viewpoints, and showcasing the complexities of global politics. The chairs skilfully explained the committee procedures while fielding questions from the audience. The students of grade 9 actively participated, demonstrating their enthusiasm, and posing thoughtful questions to the delegates on stage. The crisis session added an element of urgency, forcing the delegates to think on their feet and propose innovative solutions. The audience, inspired by the discussions, also contributed valuable suggestions. The committee's hard work culminated in the successful passage of a working paper containing proposed solutions, receiving overwhelming support from the delegates.
The Mock General Assembly session on AI as a Security Threat served as a platform to spark enthusiasm for MUN conferences among a wider range of students. The presence of Ms. Meenakshi Nayyar, Vice Principal, and Ms. Muneera Mammikutty, the Headmistress, underscored the significance of the event and its alignment with the school's commitment to nurturing informed global citizens. The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Manha Anees of grade 10 expressing gratitude to all participants and highlighting the program's success in generating interest in diplomacy and MUN among the inquisitive audience.
