Bhavans IES Holds ‘Litera 2023’, an Intraschool Literary Fest
To broaden the literary knowledge of the literati of the school, to provide a platform for them to demonstrate their literary prowess and to let them deeply immerse themselves in a fiesta that offers a cornucopia of pleasures at being part of fair and fun-filled competitions, Bhavans Indian Education School, Kuwait, grandly hosted ‘Litera 2023’, a literary extravaganza featuring an array of literary competitions, under the auspices of the Departments of English, French, Hindi, Sanskrit and Arabic, on June 10, 2023. The chief guest for the day was an alumnus of the school, Ms. Harriot George, a certified chartered accountant and the Assurance Associate at PWC Kuwait, one of the most renowned accounting firms based in Kuwait.
The inaugural ceremony of the multi-lingual fest commenced in the school auditorium at 9 a.m. with the recitation of a few verses from the Holy Quran followed by a prayer song and the Bhavans Anthem by the school choir. The teachers of the dance department then enthralled the gathering with their welcome dance clad in fervent and synchronized moves. Fida Ancy, Senior Vice-president of the Student Parliament welcomed the august gathering comprising Mr. T. Premkumar, Principal, Ms. Meenakshi Nayyar, Vice-principal, Senior Wing, Mr. Binoy Mathew, Vice-principal, Middle Wing, Ms. Muneera Mammikutty, Headmistress, the teachers, the participants of Litera 2023 and their parents.
Mr. T. Premkumar, Principal, IES, in his address, proudly stated that the very presence of an alumnus of IES, Ms. Harriot George, as the chief guest made the occasion a momentous one. He took a stroll down memory lane, talking about the inception of Litera in the academic year 2020, and how the school boldly decided to embark on conducting Litera online even during the COVID-19 lockdown. He also applauded the efforts and the synergy exhibited by all the departments of languages in making Litera 2023 an eventful one. He urged the students to learn to be effective communicators in order to be admired by others. He underscored that the learning of the art of communication, the enrichment of vocabulary and the habit of reading are inextricably fused or intermingled. He expressed his great elation in encouraging the students to be the news reporters of the events held in the school, and he said that the school always ensures the students partake in all the literary activities organized by the CBSE and other educational agencies. He concluded his address with the quote, “A good reader today will be a good leader tomorrow.”
During the briefing on Litera 2023, Nakshatra Neeraja Binu, Minister of Education, student parliament, specified the aims of conducting Litera and how IES, the beaming beacon of education, nurtures the literary adroitness of its students. She expounded further on all competitions that were being organized by the language departments in various categories.
The Chief Guest, in her keynote address, expressed her immense happiness at visiting her alma mater after 6 years and being a part of a literary event of such magnitude. She also emphasized the need to foster the habit of reading in order to fire the imagination of young minds and the importance of communication in building self-confidence and articulating creative thoughts. She congratulated the participants on being lucky to be participating in the event.
Ms. Meenakshi Nayyar, Vice-principal, in her closing thoughts, proudly stated that the participation of almost 90% of the students in the preliminary rounds of Litera 2023 proved how an event of that kind could inspire and encourage students to be part of literary activities. She profusely thanked the department of languages and the teachers for flawlessly organizing the event.
As a token of appreciation from the Bhavans fraternity, a fine painting done by Ashlin Susan of 10D was presented to the chief guest by the principal. The inaugural function came to a close with the vote of thanks proposed by Thrishanth Arunan, Vice-president of the Student Parliament, followed by the national anthem of India.
Then the excitement reached a crescendo when all the vibrant virtuosos reported to their respective venues for participating in various competitions. A host of events such as action song, puppet show, show &tell, recitation, elocution, extempore speech, word buster and debate was organised by the Department of English. The Department of French organised events such as French rhyme singing, French song singing, collage making and dessert making. The Department of Hindi organised exquisite events such as recitation, group song, dumb charades and debate. Shloka recitation, solo singing and character portrayal competitions were conducted by the Department of Sanskrit. The Department of Arabic conducted a recitation competition. The results of the competitions held in various categories were announced in the respective venues by the event coordinators soon after the contests, and the winners will receive their certificates later.
The literati of IES were in an ecstatic mood after participating in "Litera 2023," which was – as its tagline says - a literary festival that inspired them to showcase their outstanding literary abilities.
